Personal Mastery: Personal mastery is the disciplines of continually clarifying and deepening our personal vision, of focusing our energies, of developing patience, and of seeing reality objectively. Personal Mastery is the discipline that connects personal learning and organizational learning.

Mental models: Mental models are deeply ingrained assumptions, generalizations, or even pictures of images that influence how we understand the world and how we take action. These models lie below our conscious thoughts. They explain our biases, our tendency toward stereotyping. Until individuals and teams are able to bring these assumptions to the surface, they typically are unable to make progress.

Building shared vision: Our discipline takes individual visions and ties them into a shared vision, galvanizing a group to achieve its goal. This is not a flight form current reality; it sets up a creative tension that pulls current reality closer to the vision rather than having it diminishes the vision.

Team learning: According to team philosophy, teams, not individuals are the fundamental learning unit in modern organizations; unless the team can learn, the organization cannot learn. Team learning starts with dialogue; it suspends assumptions and enters into a genuine thinking together. When there are no hidden agendas, teams gather new insight and knowledge.

System thinking: This is called the fifth discipline we practice because it ties the previous four disciplines together. System thinking is a discipline for seeing wholes. It is a framework for seeing interrelationships rather than things, for seeing patterns of change rather than static snapshots. It is an attempt to keep the four from becoming individual techniques systems thinking creates a whole. This is the cornerstone of the learning organization. System thinking enables us to deal with the complexity of life in modern organization.
